About biophilic design
What is biophilic design?
Biophilic design is the deliberate integration of natural elements, patterns, and processes into the built environment. It's based on the understanding that humans have an innate affinity for nature—a trait called biophilia—and spaces that honor this connection improve wellbeing, reduce stress, enhance cognitive function, and foster a deep sense of place. Biophilic design goes beyond decoration: it creates spatial relationships, material authenticity, and environmental systems that allow people to experience nature as part of daily life. When done well, buildings feel less like structures and more like extensions of their landscape. Learn more in our complete guide to biophilic design.
Is biophilic design only for large homes or budgets?
No. Biophilic principles work at any scale and budget. Whether you're renovating a single room, designing an apartment interior, or building a new home, biophilic design can be applied through strategic choices: maximizing natural light, selecting authentic materials, creating intentional spatial flows, and establishing visual or physical connections to nature. The most impactful interventions (like window placement, material specification, and spatial organization) often don't require premium budgets. We work with clients across all budget ranges and love helping people discover how biophilic thinking can transform their space—whether through significant investment or thoughtful, incremental changes.
What is the difference between biophilic and sustainable design?
Sustainable design focuses on environmental performance and resource efficiency. Biophilic design prioritizes human wellbeing and connection to nature. The best projects integrate both: they use sustainable systems and materials while also optimizing for the human experience. A sustainable building might be energy-efficient but feel disconnected; a biophilic building creates spaces where occupants feel restored and connected to living systems.
Does biophilic design actually improve wellbeing?
Yes. Decades of research confirm that biophilic design measurably improves mental health (reducing stress and anxiety), cognitive function (improving focus and memory), physical health (improving sleep quality and reducing blood pressure), and emotional connection to space. Hospital patients with views of nature recover faster. Office workers in biophilic spaces are more productive. These aren't marginal improvements—they're significant, measurable benefits.
What are the most common biophilic design elements?
Natural light is the highest-leverage element—it influences circadian rhythm, mood, and focus. Living plants and living walls provide direct connection to nature and improve air quality. Authentic natural materials (wood, stone, clay) communicate geological time and natural processes, creating tactile richness and sensory depth. Water features engage multiple senses and introduce movement and sound. Views to nature or natural patterns (fractals, spirals) inspire innate biophilic response. Spatial organization reflecting natural principles—prospect and refuge, enclosure and openness, visual rhythm—creates psychological comfort and wayfinding ease. The most effective biophilic spaces layer multiple elements together rather than relying on a single intervention.
Working with CANOPY
How do I start a project with CANOPY?
Reach out to schedule an initial consultation. We'll discuss your vision, site, constraints, and how we might collaborate. This conversation is low-pressure—it's simply an opportunity to explore whether we're a good fit and understand what's possible for your project. There's no obligation.
What types of projects do you take on?
We work on residential architecture (new homes and significant renovations), interior design (single-room to whole-home projects), landscape integration, and commercial & hospitality design. We also accept select international commissions. Every project must align with our biophilic philosophy and commitment to authentic, site-responsive design. Explore our services to learn more.
Do you work with clients outside the local region?
Yes, we accept select international commissions and regularly work with clients across North America and beyond. Our approach emphasizes deep site research and understanding local climate, ecology, vernacular materials, and cultural context—which we bring to projects worldwide. The design process adapts based on distance and site complexity.
How involved will I be in the design process?
Very involved. Our process is collaborative from start to finish. We begin by deeply understanding your vision, needs, and site through conversation and research. Throughout design development, we present concepts, gather your feedback, and refine together. We prioritize transparency and ensure that the final design reflects your values and vision while embodying biophilic principles.
Do you manage the construction phase?
Yes. We provide construction administration on most projects, coordinating with contractors, reviewing progress, and ensuring design intent is honored during implementation. We're involved through project completion to verify that materials, details, and spatial relationships match the design vision.
Timelines and process
How long does a typical residential project take?
It depends on scope. Interior design projects typically take 6-12 months from concept to completion. Whole-home renovations often take 12-18 months. New construction projects generally range from 18-36 months from initial design through completion. We discuss realistic timelines during the initial consultation based on your specific scope and complexity.
What happens during the initial consultation?
We listen. We ask questions about your vision, how you live, what matters to you, constraints, and goals. We may visit your site to understand its context, orientation, views, and ecological character. We explain our approach and design philosophy. The outcome is a clear understanding of whether we're a good fit and initial thoughts on what's possible. This typically takes 1-2 hours and carries no obligation.
How many revisions are included in your design process?
We include collaborative refinement as part of our standard process—not a fixed number of "revisions." We present design directions, gather your feedback, and iterate until the design is right. We value getting to a strong concept that you're confident in, rather than rushing through superficial rounds of changes. The goal is alignment, not revision cycles.
Fees and investment
How does CANOPY charge for its services?
Our fee structure depends on project type and scope. We typically work on a combination of hourly consultation, project fees, or percentage-of-construction-cost arrangements. We discuss what makes sense for your project during the initial consultation. We believe in transparent, fair pricing that reflects the depth of research and expertise we bring.
What affects the cost of a biophilic design project?
Several factors: project scope and scale (new construction vs. renovation), site complexity (challenging topography or ecology requires more research), material specifications (authentic, living materials may cost differently than conventional alternatives), construction timeline and location, and the degree of customization or bespoke design. We discuss all of these during consultation and provide clear estimates.
Do you offer phased or partial-scope engagements?
Yes. Not every client is ready for a full architectural engagement. We're happy to work on single services—interior design consultation, landscape planning, material specification, or design-only phases. Phased approaches allow you to implement biophilic principles incrementally, testing ideas before committing to larger investments. Let's discuss what works for you.
