About the project

Courtyard Commons is a public gathering space designed to demonstrate how landscape architecture can catalyze community connection. Nestled within a dense urban context, the courtyard functions as an oasis—a place where people naturally gather, linger, and feel a sense of belonging. Rather than imposing a formal design, we worked with the existing site conditions to create a space that feels naturally restorative.

The design prioritizes accessibility and inclusion. Paths accommodate all mobility types, seating is distributed to create both social and solitary gathering spots, and native planting creates habitat while requiring minimal maintenance. Water features provide both visual and acoustic benefits, masking urban noise while creating contemplative gathering points.

Design approach and materials

The design process began with understanding the existing community and the types of activities that naturally occur in public space. We conducted extensive site observation, mapping how people moved through and used adjacent areas, what activities drew gatherings, and where conflicts occurred. This led to a design that facilitates rather than controls behavior.

The landscape palette emphasizes native plants that support local ecology while creating seasonal transformation. Spring brings flowering understory species, summer provides dense canopy and cooling, fall offers subtle color, and winter reveals the architectural geometry of branch structure. Water integration includes both static features for reflection and dynamic features for sensory engagement. Hardscape materials are selected for durability, accessibility, and textural warmth—nothing that suggests a sterile, corporate environment.

Seating is diversified: moveable chairs encourage flexible gathering, built-in benches create social hierarchy, and edge conditions allow for solitary observation. Lighting is designed to extend usability into evening hours while maintaining a human scale and avoiding surveillance aesthetics. The overall composition feels like a discovered garden rather than a designed space.

The outcome

Courtyard Commons has become a vital community gathering space, drawing users across age, background, and ability. The design demonstrates that biophilic principles scale to public landscapes—that access to nature and living systems can be democratic rather than exclusive. The space hosts informal gatherings, seasonal events, and quiet individual moments, all supported by a landscape that facilitates without controlling.

The project validates our belief that landscape architecture is fundamentally about creating the conditions for human flourishing. By prioritizing ecological health, accessibility, and sensory richness, we've created a space where community naturally emerges. The project has influenced municipal thinking about public space design in the region.
