About the project

Heritage Renovation is an interior design project that demonstrates how biophilic principles can refresh a historic home while honoring its original character and craftsmanship. Rather than erasing history in pursuit of contemporary aesthetics, we undertook a careful analysis of the home's original design intent, restoring what had been obscured and thoughtfully introducing new elements that feel like natural evolution rather than imposition.

The clients sought a home that bridges their connection to its past with their contemporary lifestyle. The solution required understanding what made the original design work, then thoughtfully introducing natural materials, living systems, and spatial flexibility that serve modern living while deepening the home's existing character. Every intervention respects the original vision while making the space more alive, more connected to nature, and more functional for contemporary living.

Design approach and materials

The design process began with historical research and careful observation of the home's original spaces. We identified which architectural elements were essential to its character, which had been compromised over time, and where we had opportunity for thoughtful intervention. This analysis informed a phased restoration and renovation approach that felt like uncovering rather than replacing.

Key interventions include: restoring original window frames to maximize natural light, opening views between previously compartmentalized spaces, introducing living plantings that complement original woodwork, and updating mechanical systems to be invisible while dramatically improving comfort. Finishes were selected to complement rather than compete with original elements—matte finishes that reference the patina of age, colors that harmonize with existing palette, materials that suggest authenticity and time rather than newness.

The renovation introduced biophilic elements without compromising historical integrity. Living walls are positioned where they integrate with original architectural details, natural materials coordinate with existing wood species, and spatial flows now connect interior to exterior landscape views that the original design intended but had been obscured. The result feels like the home's natural maturation rather than a dramatic renovation.
